Recently, I was able to secure a location for hula hoop lessons and an open hula hoop session starting in January. You can imagine how excited I was to get this news. Thank you Jo Dumont and Jo Dumont Fitness Training! Now, by times I lead a pretty charmed life, so of course Tasha from Shaw Media TV Red Deer was trying to get in touch with me to do a piece on Hula Hooping. Of Course!!

So I sent out some emails and gathered some hoopers. On a cold Thursday morning we all arrived at JDFT and hooped for an hour while Tasha filmed and interviewed. It felt so great to be out hooping again. Admittedly, there were a lot of cobwebs I realized I had to dust off, but it felt great!!

Below is the final product.

If you are interested in hula hooping in January, visit the Red Deer Hula Hoopers page and join the mailing list where I send out all things related to Red Deer and hula hoops.

See you in Jan!

If you are looking for hula hoop workout videos to keep you motivated and give you something new to try, rather than the same repetitions over and over, I have created something for you! =)

I realize that a lot of people that are searching for hula hoop videos, are not necessarily trying to learn more moves or watching for inspiration… some people just want something more similar to an aerobics video. When I started searching for these videos, I realized how hard it was to just find videos. Many of the “Hula Hoop Workout Videos” are actually interviews or people talking about the benefits of hula hooping… they aren’t actually showing you what to do. Frustrating.

For your convenience, I have developed a weekly newsletter that will deliver at least one new hula hoop workout video to your inbox each week. If you are interested in receiving the weekly newsletter, simply….

— Visit the Hula Hoop for Exercise page and enter your email address.

Also, if you ever find a video you think would be good to share with other newsletter subscribers, send it to me or post in the comments section. I would love to grow this so we can all benefit.

Happy Hooping!

As I mentioned before, I’m trying to bulk up the tutorial section of the site and today my goal was to expand the mini/doubles section. Last year I couldn’t even find a five beat weave tutorial on Youtube and today I was able to find two really great tutorials.

It’s a bit funny because in one of the videos, harmonyhoops comments on the fact that she now understands why no tutorials exist online because it is such a hard move to break down.

I believe it.

The five beat weave is HARD. HARD!! I read somewhere that you should learn to do the five beat weave within one year of starting your hoop journey because it will be much harder if you wait.

I believe it.

It’s all about timing. You have to be patient and wait for just the exact moment to continue with the move. Yikes! I can do it now after a lot of practice. A LOT! Make sure you are using very light hoops and heck, if you want to be like steve2bags in his tutorial… add a helmet!

Here is the Five Beat Weave Tutorial Page.

Have fun! Please share any tutorials you find that have been useful! I love adding to the collection.

I recently learned about a project that two men have undertaken to develop a better LED hoop. I quite honestly have never seen anything like it.

This hoop has over 100 LED lights in it, which is much greater than your standard LED (I’m hope I’m getting the terminology correct). At any rate, not only do you have more lights, but you have the capability to program them in whatever order you would like. Have minis and want to sync them? Easy breezy! Want to program your hoop to match your hoop to the music you are dancing to? No problem. You use a magnetic devise to change programs. It uses your computer to download the programs for the lights. HUH?

The video below has the founders describing what the product and project is. I have offered up $ 250 to their kick start program. Not only will that guarantee me a hoop once they are made, but it feels good to be supporting something I’m so interested in. There is a demo of the hoop at the end of the video.

My favourite part of this website is the Tutorial list I have been creating for as long as the website has existed… (maybe a year and a half at this point?) I have worked hard to find tutorials that break down moves that I have learned or eventually want to learn. Today I read a discussion on HoopCity where a hooper asks how to do a continuous vertical duck out (this is on my eventual list… lol).

Now, I didn’t have much to add to the discussion, but she did post a link to a great youtube video that does seem to break the move down quite well. Most importantly, it is great for a visual learner. The hooper has short hair and is wearing a sleeveless dress so you can see exactly where the hoop is hitting and what she is doing with her body.

I have added a new page to our Tutorials section for this move here, but I also wanted to share it here. Feel free to send me any other link that you have found especially helpful at learning this move (or any other move for that matter). I love growing the tutorials section.

Last year was a crazy year for me and my family. I was working almost full time, I was definitely a full time Mom and I was a part time Mompreneur for a few businesses. I’ll be honest, I loved all three of my jobs. Unfortunately though, something had to give.

I have quit my job and am now staying home exclusively with my youngest. Although on the surface, it seems like I have more time, I in fact feel like I have less.

As a result, I’m changing up my Hula Hoop business to try and accommodate our living situation. I will no longer be shipping hula hoops. If you are local and want to purchase a hula hoop, I will sell to you, but I will no longer be mailing them out.

I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. I will fill all orders purchased via paypal to date, but that will be it.

The website will begin to concentrate a lot more on the art of hula hooping, tutorials, etc. I will likely monetize the site in some form whether that is selling advertising banner space or adding other types of adds to help pay for hosting, etc.

Please contact me with any questions or comments you may have.

Yours in Hooping!

Whew! That title is a mouthful… but describes the little kiddos that I’m trying to help. As you may know, my oldest son has a language disorder. What you likely do not know is that there is no support grou in Red Deer to assist parents of these children.

What I am attempting to do is create a group of parents and/or professionals that are interested in scheduled meetings to discuss a variety of topics related to these children. As well, the group could also be used a spring board for play dates, etc.

I have created a mini webpage dedicated to what the group could look like and contact information if it is something that interests you.

If you are interested or know someone that may be, please send them to http://www.squidoo.com/red-deer-speech

Today I was scanning webpages for anything hula hoop and I cam across this funny story about a hula hoop lady. Apparently… she must know something everyone else doesn’t because she is able to smile and have fun regardless of what is in the news.

Isn’t it sad that many members of society have forgotten what it is like to just stop and have fun. To stop and smell those proverbial roses. To just… be?

Hula hooping has brought many things to my life… It makes me pause. It makes me contemplate my thoughts for more than thirty seconds. It slows me down. It helps me understand my children better. It helps me… well… be me.

Here is the link to the article, named People Are Strange. What do you think? I think we hoopers are not the strange ones… I think it’s society that is the strange one. But one thing I’m certain of… I want to meet that hula hoop lady. =)
